Weeknotes: Week 43, 2024

Here’s what happened during the week of October 21—27, 2024.

What’s got us horrified this week

You might have noticed this week that Mike Jeffries, his partner Matthew Smith, and their associate Jim Jacobson were charged with operating a prostitution and international sex trafficking business while Jeffries was the CEO of retailer Abercrombie & Fitch.

Last year, the BBC released a podcast called World of Secrets. I’ve been listening to the first season, called “The Abercrombie Guys,” which is the culmination of a two-year investigation by Rianna Croxford that explains in painful detail how Jeffries, Smith, and Jacobson recruited and sexually abused scores of young men.

If you’re wondering why this particular episode of Billionaire Privilege Theatre[1] has gotten my attention it’s because Abercrombie & Fitch is a local brand, headquartered right here in the Columbus suburb of New Albany. I’ve run the A&F 5k, I’ve worn their clothes, and I have friends who worked there. (I applied for a job there a few years ago, but they didn’t hire me.) The point is, it hits close to home. We haven’t heard the last of this story, and I’m very sure we haven’t learned the full extent of it either.

Weekend trip to Maryland

🦀 Went to visit our friends in Maryland and very nice couple of days in which we walked along the C&D Canal, tasted wine at a local winery, and saw some cool jack-o-lanterns.

📷 I took my beloved FujiFilm X-E3 with me, programmed with some new film simulation recipes that I wanted to try. Sadly, on one of our day trips I forgot to put the SD card back in the camera! Fortunately, I did get a few pics using the Kodachrome II recipe and I’m really happy with how they look.

This week’s /now page highlights

Thanks to Rebecca Alter’s New York magazine story, (“Big Tits, Trim Ankles, and a Peabody”), I was alerted to the fact that a third and final season of Somebody Somewhere is returning to HBO. It’s a show about regular people with regular problems and a lot of heart.

Now that I’ve finished episodes 6 and 7 of Bad Monkey, it’s finally gotten a head of steam and I’m starting to enjoy it.

Re-watched Class Action Park because my wife had not seen it. I can’t believe this place actually existed.

Finished the latest seasons of The Old Man and Slow Horses. Neither show is my favorite thing ever but they’re both pretty good and I’ll be back for more.

Still training for a 5k

That’s all from this end. Talk to you soon!
