Weeknotes: Week 22, 2023
The week of May 29 to June 4 was surprisingly eventful. Here are the highlights.
-
😮💨 Week 22 was a short work week because of the long holiday weekend (and the extra day off I took on Tuesday), and I still struggled to get through it.
-
🤖 I played around with Adobe Photoshop’s generative fill for the first time this week and it’s rather impressive. I took a selfie in a vineyard over the weekend, loaded it into Photoshop, extended the aspect ratio to 2.5:1, and asked it to fill in the missing background. The result is pretty good!
-
🚙 I’m pretty good at jumping on bandwagons lately, and the .lol domain land rush is no exception. I registered mihobu.lol—using Porkbun as many here on omg.lol have recommended—and so far I’m very happy I did. (In fact, if all goes well I may end up transferring my other domains over there.) All links and keys have been updated and everything seems to have transitioned smoothly.
-
☎️ Speaking of domains, I re-pointed my amateur radio domain w8mhb.com to my QRZ.com profile page using the very cool omg.lol switchboard. It eliminates a separate landing site that I had been maintaining and just makes more sense this way.
-
🐘 I added Mastodon comments to my weblog posts, using the instructions and code found in this blog post by Abhinav Sarkar. I can’t remember how I found this, but I a big thank you to whomever shared this.
-
🏛️ If you haven’t seen Chris Hytha’s Highrises Collection, you owe it to yourself to check it out. He photographs Art Deco skyscrapers, floor by floor, during Golden Hour and then stitches them together to make images that are spectacular. He describes his process here.
-
🎬 The Succession and Ted Lasso finales were both this week and I’m both sad and relieved. They both had good runs and didn’t overstay their welcome. The best part: Ted’s note to Trent Crimm.
-
🥘 I got a cool new cookbook for my birthday this week: The Food Lab, by J. Kenji López-Alt. Now I suppose my family will be expecting me to cook more stuff for them.
-
💍 I’ve been doing a pretty good job of closing my rings since the weather has warmed up. (Except for Thursday, not sure what happened there.) I played some pickle ball a couple of days and got out on the bike once for 14 miles. I’m looking forward to getting more miles in over the next few months.
-
💍 I also joined the Unofficial OMG.lol Webring this week. Remember webrings? It reminds me of the old days, back in the 90’s, when we had to walk the Internet uphill. Both ways. There was no GOOGLE or SIRI. All we had were the NCSA What’s New page, Jerry’s Web Guide, and our wits. Blinking text, anyone?
-
🇲🇽 Where have I been? is the question people answered this week—in blog posts listing all the countries (and in some cases, US states) they have visited. Thanks to Marco, Maique, and several others who inspired me to make my own list. Now I feel like I need to dig up some photos from each place!
-
⛩️ I went with some friends to visit a most unexpectedly beautiful place: Schnormeier Gardens in Gambier, Ohio. Of course, I snapped a few pictures.
