Triweekly Update (Weeknotes #25-33)
My last weeknotes post was three weeks ago so I’ll call this one a triweekly update. It was a busy three weeks that included a last-minute trip abroad. I’ll share what I can rememeber.
I made some major changes to my blogs.
-
Changing call signs required that I also change my amateur radio blog’s address. (I registered the domain ai5.mx domain to match the new call. It also seemed like a good opportunity to learn how to build a site using Eleventy. It was a pretty bumpy ride and there are quite a few things still broken, but it’s mostly working and I’ve enjoyed learning something new. The new site is hosted on Amazon CloudFront.
-
For whatever reason, I also migrated my “general interest” blog to Eleventy. This has been a much bigger lift because there’s a lot more content there. A lot of things are still broken here, but I’m gradually getting it sorted. Most notably, the RSS/Atom feeds are very broken. I’m tempted to add an obnoxious “Under Construction” GIF.

I created a new blog, called OMNIROLL to collect all kinds of short form content. It is a hybrid that combines my now page, blogroll, linkroll, postroll, photo feed, and archival copies of my Mastodon posts. Content is stored in places that I control (weblog.lol and S3) and posting is as easy as composing a toot. (Although I can and do compose content directly using the weblog web interface too.)
We went to Mexico.
During the week of August 9–15, my wife and I traveled to Mexico.
The main reason for our trip was to present ourselves at an immigration office to obtain our permanent residency cards. Upon receiving a residency visa, you get six months to exchange it for a residency card. We wanted to get that out of the way sooner than later, which is why the trip was sort of a last minute thing. Fortunately, process went very smoothly.
We are on the home stretch of our careers and are working out where and how we want to live in retirement. Mexico and its people are lovely, so we’ve decided that it’s the right place for us. (There are plenty of other good reasons too.) Once we’re no longer working We expect to spend half the year or so in Mexico and eventually live there year round. But for now we haven’t quite worked out exactly where that will be.
Thus the second reason for the trip: to scout cities. We visited several this time, including Puerto Vallarta, Neuvo Nayarit, Bucerías, Sayulita, Punta de Mita, Chapala, and Ajijic. We’re planning at least one more scouting trip in the coming months.
We are very grateful to the people who have helped us—and continue to help us—through this process. Thank you!
Other Goings On
-
I got my monthly challenge award in Apple Fitness. That makes 8 months straight. I'm still working on August
-
Got my new updated amateur radio service license grant from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). I wrote a blog post about this.
-
Started using Tapestry to get my RSS feeds under control. So far, it’s pretty good. I just have to remember to keep up, there’s so much good content out there!
-
I also started using Folio to manage my reading. This really comes in handy for remembering things I wanted to read, and to keep track of what I have already read. I don’t know why it won’t let me copy text from an article in the Mac app though.
Watching, Reading, Listening, etc.

Here are a few articles and posts I read in the last week or three.

To see what else I’ve been up to lately, you can visit my Omniroll , or subscribe to follow in near real time.
That’s all I can think of for now. It’s probably enough. Until next time, cheers!
