Weeknotes: Week 29, 2023
Here are the highlights of the week of July 17 to July 23.

🦁 The whole fam’ was together on Sunday to visit the Cincinnati Zoo, where my oldest daughter works part time. She showed us all around and shared some “behind the scenes” stories with us. Many of the animals were quite active, which was a little surprising given how hot is was. Highlights for me were walking among the kangaroos (no fences or barriers of any kind) and hearing a lion roar. There are a few more cute animal pics here.
🌏 Have you played Worldle yet? If you like Wordle and you’re also into Geography then this is for you. Each day a new country is shown—shape only, no other hints about scale—and you have six tries to name it. There’s a bonus round too: once you know the country, you have to name it’s neighbors—also by shape alone. Some days it’s super easy and others it’s diabolical, but it’s always fun!
☔️ I downloaded Weather Mate Pro for iOS and Apple Watch. I was having trouble with the Apple weather app, which was giving me weird incorrect forecast information. There are quite a few weather apps out there, but I chose this one on the strength of its support for Apple Watch complications. In the week or so since I started using it I’ve been very happy with it.

I didn’t close my rings every day so in that sense it wasn’t exactly a banner week. But I did manage to get in almost 10 hours of activity, 73,147 steps, two huge pickleball workouts, and I burned 8,074 calories. And hey I’m down more than 30 pounds since March, so I’m gonna say it was a good week.
🙏 A few gratitudes this week, thank you to
-
Alexandra, Hiro, Kerri Ann, Maique, and Marco, among others in the Mastodon community for sharing their weeknotes each week and providing me with a rich source of information and inspiration.
-
Simon for introducing me to Tom Gauld, and by extension to New Scientist magazine. I ran right out and got a copy of Revenge of the Librarians from my local library.
🍿 This week’s film and television highlights (and lowlights):
-
Hijack actually got good this week.
-
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was decidedly not so good.
-
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - This film is underrated; it’s really not too bad. But when compared to the other five films starring the original cast, it is technically the worst.
-
Justified: City Primeval - The first episode grabs you right away and that’s good. But I worry that it’ll become just another season-long arcing bore.
-
Watching the FIFA Women’s World Cup with great interest. The match times do not comport with my schedule very well, however.
